Montgomery Motors was established by Alfred Newton Montgomery Sr. in 1946, he was born in Wetumka, Oklahoma in 1919.  When the Dustbowl of the Great Depression hit Okalahoma in the 1930’s the, Family moved to Bakersfield, California. Al’s parents started a boarding house for other families trying to escape the Dust Bowl stricken area of the United Sates.

At the age of 19 he bought his first Harley which he loved to ride up and down the west coast. Naomi was a lady and would not go out with a man that rode a motorcycle so Al did what any love struck young man would do and sold his bike and started to court Naomi.  They soon became married, moved to Honolulu, Hawaii and shortly after Al took a job at Pearl Harbor as an electrical journeyman.  He was a civilian working for the military, living in the Pearl Harbor housing CH-A3.

Al was a firefighter at the base and was called to duty on December 7, 1941. As Naomi was evacuated to safety,  Al went to fight fires and provided support where help was needed. For two weeks Al could not contact or locate Naomi.  During the war Al contracted typhoid fever and was quarantined to his home. Going stir-crazy he bought a broken-down Harley and tore it apart on his living-room floor.

As you can imagine the surprise Naomi had when she came home from work. By the time he was better he had the bike back together and in good working condition. He ended up selling the bike, but became known as a mechanic for Harleys, and as the word spread that he could fix bikes many military men would stop by the apartment to get work done on their bikes.  When Naomi was home she would make sandwiches in her kitchen and sell them to the guys hanging out around the house for 10 cents a piece.  Realizing there was money to be made by repairing motorcycles they both started to save their money so they could open a full shop.  (Get the rest of the story from the Hawaiian Chopper Magazine interview.)
