A Fun Story about Al Montgomery Sr. “the stuntman” and the Movie Mister Roberts
This story starts off with a big time movie
producer who comes to the shop located at 804 Dillingham Boulevard and wants to
buy a Harley Davidson for the filming of the movie Mr. Roberts starring
Henry Fonda, James Cagney, William Powell and Jack Lemmon.
Al Sr. sell him the
Harley for a good price about $700 back then, and the producer invites him and
the employees down to the harbor at the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base to watch them
film the bike. The bike was being used for a stunt in which a drunken sailor
was late returning to the ship and the ship was already pulling out of port, the
drunken sailor runs the Harley off the end of the pier trying to catch the
ship. Since they had just finished dredging the new harbor their was still some
mud and silt still left, so the stuntman the producers had hired and flew in
from the mainland chickened out and started handing the producer back the money
he had paid him. When the gang form the shop saw this they started to yell
“Montgomery will do it!” Sure enough
Al Sr., who by this time already had a
few beers… Says “Hell Yeah I’ll do it!!” So Al Sr. puts on the sailor dress whites
and tells the cameraman to get this in on
one shot. Well he takes the bike and
runs down the pier bobbing and weaving like a drunken sailor would and flies
off the pier into the water with the bike!!! After the stunt, they sent
divers to retrieve the bike, after about an hour of looking they still could not
find it. Al Sr. goes up to the producer and says, “If I can get it in one toss
of this hook do I get to keep it?” The producer, thinking there’s no way he’s
going to grab it, says “You gotta deal!” And sure as shit with one toss the
hooks the bike and they were able to tow it out of the water, and the next week
it was back on the showroom floor! If you ever want to watch a great classic
